Let's Talk Shop
Jay and Jess met more than 20 years ago at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Since then, their careers have taken them across complementary corners of the same world—marketing, design, communications, editorial, entrepreneurship, and business leadership. Along the way, they've done what most long-time partners naturally do: collaborate behind the scenes, pressure-test ideas, sharpen messaging, and step in as each other's most trusted creative sounding board.
Now, they're formally uniting those aligned strengths to support innovative companies and startups with a well-rounded mix of marketing, design, and business consulting.
Brings 25+ years of experience spanning news media, marketing, and higher education, with extensive experience in writing and editing, graphic and web design, mobile app development, design thinking, teaching, business strategy and leadership—grounded in clarity, usability, and strong storytelling.
Brings 15+ years of experience in PR and communications, executive thought leadership, content marketing and content strategy, social media management, SEO, and the evolving landscape of generative search (GEO)—focused on building visibility, credibility, and growth through content that performs.
Together, they combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution and a working rhythm refined over decades: collaborative, kind, candid, and deeply invested in outcomes. At Clewis Consulting, the mission is simple—help smart teams communicate with clarity, build trust, and drive real business results.
We help startups and growth-minded companies clarify their story, strengthen their brand, and turn great work into consistent visibility and revenue. Our consulting support typically includes:
Brand building, editorial planning, pillar content, blogs, landing pages, email, and thought leadership designed to earn attention and convert.
Go-to-market strategy including launch messaging, campaign planning, and practical consulting to help you execute with focus and confidence.
Narrative development, media-ready messaging, and leadership content that builds credibility with customers, partners, and investors.
Search-driven content planning and optimization that helps you show up in traditional search and AI discovery.
Social media content themes, posting strategy, repurposing, and voice-driven social copy that's clear and consistent.
Equipping your teams with the skills, frameworks, and confidence to excel and innovate.
Most consultants sit in one lane—marketing or design or business strategy. We've spent our careers across all three, and that's what makes Clewis Consulting different: you get a complete, connected perspective without the bloat of an agency team. Here's what that looks like in practice:
Jay brings strategy, systems thinking, editorial rigor, and clarity-first design. Jess brings messaging, PR, content strategy, and growth marketing. Together, we pressure-test ideas from every angle, strategy, story, and execution, so you move forward with confidence.
Because we've collaborated for decades, you're not paying for two separate freelancers who need time to align. You're getting a tight working partnership that moves quickly, stays cohesive, and catches gaps before they become expensive.
We don't just hand over a deck and disappear. We help define the narrative and build assets that bring it to life, including content, messaging, and campaigns.
Everything we create is built to drive real business results: clearer positioning, stronger credibility, better conversion, and more predictable visibility.
In addition to their consulting work, Jay is a college professor and Jess provides content strategy for innovative companies. In their spare time, they love watching and attending a wide variety of sporting events.
Currently an assistant teaching professor at Syracuse University; Jay is a former journalist, digital product designer, and founder, who also advises startups on branding, product positioning, and go-to-market strategy.
His work blends human-centered design, content strategy, and generative AI, alongside academic work at the forefront of communications. Relatively new to San Diego, Jay volunteers with the Syracuse Alumni Club of San Diego and organizes events in the region.
Specializes in content marketing, corporate narrative, and content strategy, helping organizations translate complex products and opportunities into clear, high-performing narrative campaigns.
Her work focuses on building executive voice, driving visibility, and creating scalable content programs across health tech and SaaS, supported by SEO/GEO strategy. Jess supports multiple nonprofits and is the former president of PAWS of CNY, a pet therapy nonprofit in upstate New York.
